working principle

The ammonia nitrogen in the form of free ammonia or ammonium ions reacts with the Nessler reagent to form a reddish-brown complex. The absorbance of the complex is proportional to the ammonia nitrogen content, and the absorbance is measured at a wavelength of 420 nm.

Method of operation

Take 10 ml of water sample, add 2 ml of reagent, leave it at room temperature for 10 minutes, and use a 10 mm cuvette for colorimetry.

Eliminate interference

Removal of residual chlorine

If residual chlorine is present in the sample, it can be removed by adding an appropriate amount of sodium thiosulfate solution (ρ=3.5 g/L). Each 0.5 ml can remove 0.25 mg of residual chlorine. The starch-potassium iodide test paper was used to check whether the residual chlorine was removed.

Flocculation precipitation

Add 1 ml of zinc sulphate solution (100 g/L) and 0.1~0.2 ml of sodium hydroxide solution (ρ=250 g/L) to 100 ml of sample, adjust the pH to about 10.5, mix, place to precipitate, and pour Supernatant analysis. If necessary, filter with medium speed filter paper washed with water and discard 20 ml of the initial filtrate. The sample after flocculation can also be centrifuged.

Predistillation

Transfer 50 ml of boric acid solution (ρ=20 g/L) into the receiving bottle to ensure that the condenser outlet is below the level of the boric acid solution. Divate 250 ml of the sample, transfer it to the flask, add a few drops of bromothymol blue indicator (ρ = 0.5 g / L), if necessary, with sodium hydroxide solution (c (NaOH) = 1 mol / L) or hydrochloric acid Solution (c(HCl)=1 mol/L) adjust the pH to 6.0 (the indicator is yellow) ~ 7.4 (the indicator is blue), add 0.25 g of light magnesium oxide and several glass beads, immediately connect the nitrogen ball and Condensate tube.
