Asphalt material used in highway engineering is generally a semi-solid viscous substance at room temperature. To be used in highway engineering, it must be made liquid before it can be used for spraying or mixing with minerals.
To make it liquid, there are currently three methods available. One is the commonly used heating method, which is to heat the asphalt to 130-180 ℃ to make it into a flowing state, and then spray or mix with the heated mineral material at high temperature; second, use petroleum, kerosene, diesel and other solvents to disperse the petroleum asphalt Dilute into liquid asphalt, this product is also called light asphalt or diluted asphalt, and then spray or mix with mineral at normal temperature; third, emulsify the asphalt.
The so-called emulsified asphalt is the hot melt of asphalt. After mechanical action, the asphalt is dispersed in fine droplets in the aqueous solution containing emulsifier to form an oil-in-water asphalt emulsion. This emulsion is dry liquid at room temperature.
The emulsion includes two types of water-in-oil and oil-in-water. When the continuous phase is water and the discontinuous phase is oil, it is the oil-in-water type (Figure 1-1), otherwise it is the water-in-oil type. Asphalt particles are uniformly dispersed in an emulsion containing an emulsifier in a stable emulsion.
Emulsified asphalt is a road construction material that is usually used at high temperature through mechanical agitation and chemical stabilization (emulsification), diffuses into water and liquefies into a low viscosity and fluidity at room temperature. Can be used at room temperature, and can be used with cold and wet stones. When the emulsified asphalt is demulsified and solidified-it is reduced to continuous asphalt and the water is completely eliminated before the final strength of the road material can be formed.
In many road construction applications, emulsified asphalt provides a safer, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly system than hot asphalt, because this process avoids high-temperature operation, heating, and harmful emissions.

Emulsified asphalt is mainly used for road upgrading and maintenance, such as stone chip sealing layer, and there are a variety of unique and irreplaceable applications of other asphalt materials, such as cold mix and slurry sealing layer. Emulsified asphalt can also be used for new road construction, such as sticky layer oil, permeable layer oil, etc.
