Xihe, Gansu: Internet boosts ancient papermaking into a new industry

In the early morning of summer, in the Liuhe Village, Xishan Township, Xihe County, Weinan City, Gansu Province, the poor people in the Qinba Mountain Area, Hu Fengqi, who learned papermaking skills from a young age, came to the backyard and began a day of work. In the past few years, he relied on ancient papermaking to get rid of poverty, which has his hard work and the help of the Internet.

Next to a 2-meter wide bin, holding a wand Hufeng Yu uniformly beaten pulp in the barrels, Rang administered into the groove. He held a paper curtain with a fine mesh attached and stirred it in the water. After a few minutes, he took out the wooden frame with pulp fibers, stood on the side of the table, gently peeled off, and peeled off a piece of wet, translucent tissue from the fine net. Not far from the hanging paper yard, more than 10 pieces of hemp paper were stretched in the box, and the sun was shining. At first glance, I thought it was a screen window.

Hu Fengqi’s hands are still alive, and Hu Fengqi’s feet are still not slap on the beat. The paper is written by his own paper-making song: “The green mountains surround the green water, and the ancestral paper can’t be lost. The papermaking technology is a gem, and it is carried forward and beautiful.”

Liu Hecun, where Hu Fengqi is located, is a paper-paper village where his ancestors passed on the paper. Their family has been the fifth generation of hemp paper from the number of seniors with names. The hemp paper he made is a small-scale indigenous paper produced in Zhuhe Village and Liuhe Village in Xihe County. It is a folk paper that has been going on for thousands of years and still has a set of hand-crafted craftsmanship. Every spring, the villagers cut the branches of the eucalyptus trees in the specially planted eucalyptus forest. The bark was bubbled, steamed, stepped on, simmered, cut, and copied , and eventually became hemp paper. In 2017 , Xihe Paper was established as a provincial intangible cultural heritage.

According to the professor of Northwest Normal University, Zhao Yufu, the Xihan watershed at the junction of Xihe, Lixian and Chengxian in Gansu, Gansu Province has been a place for producing hemp paper since ancient times. The texts written in the existing hemp papers in Xihe County are: the seventeen kinds of shadow play transcripts of the Ming Dynasty and the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty, the contract of Jiaqing for 20 years, and the scripts, title deeds and receipts of Daoguang, Tongzhi and Guangxu years. Wait.

Shen Yu, a member of the Calligraphers Association of Xihe County, Gansu Province, said: "Compared with rice paper, Xihe Paper is simple in color, paper is flexible, wearable, and extremely flexible. It has a history of vicissitudes and mottledness. The antique paintings and paintings created are very effective, especially suitable for the early quaint books like Zhang Cao in calligraphy."

Three or four decades ago, the homes of ordinary people, who used the paper-paper snacks, paper-burning money, and paste walls, couldn’t afford the children of the books, but also used the hemp paper to order the homework. However, with the rise of cement houses and the improvement of farmers' lives, few people use paper to paste the wall. The unproductive earth-made paper fades out of the "ordinary people's home" and is no longer useful.

Hu Fengqi told reporters that in the past people's lives mainly depended on the production of hemp paper to maintain their livelihood, but papermaking costs are a difficult technical activity. "Many young people can't afford to suffer, and they can't stand the troubles. They choose to go out to work. The craftsmen are also tempted by their ancestral skills, but they have always been poor." In this way, there are fewer and fewer people in Murakami.

In 2013 , Weinan City vigorously developed e-commerce. The application of the Internet made the special products of Dashanli gradually familiar with the outside world and began to go out of the mountains. At that time, a university student village official named Wang Ji thought, can this ancient papermaking technology expand sales through the Internet and pave the way for the masses to get rich? So, he opened a Taobao shop, sold hemp paper online, and promoted it through WeChat group, calligrapher forum, post bar and so on. Gradually, Xihe Paper was revitalized through the Internet, raising the “worth” and starting to “give turn” from ordinary indigenous folk paper to high-end painting and calligraphy.

“Now every province has our users. In 2014 , the first foreign order appeared, which was exported to Japan. Now there are often orders from Taiwan.” Today, Wang Ji has become the spokesperson of Xihe Paper. To help villagers in Zhuhe Village and Liuhe Village to expand the sales channels of hemp paper through e-commerce, and now no one in the two villages knows him.

Yao Liping, deputy director of the Xihe County E-Commerce Center, told reporters that Xihe Paper is a typical industry forced by e-commerce. Since 2014 , Xihe County has sold hemp paper through e-commerce channels. At present, there are 56 online stores with the theme of hemp paper , with sales of 6.69 million yuan.

With the hot sale of Xihe Maji in the online shop, the wallets of many craftsmen in Liuhe and Zhuhe villages have been bulging, and many young people have returned to their hometowns, regaining their family-run skills for many years and starting to make paper. Liu Xiaobo of Zhuhe Village is one of them.

Liu Xiaobo's family of six people produces hemp paper all the year round, producing an average of five or six hundred knives per year ( 100 per knife ). Through the e-commerce platform, many foreign guests come to the door to make custom-made paper, and the paper merchants in the city will also come to large-scale wholesale. He roughly calculated that last year's sales were at least 200,000 yuan.

Nowadays, more and more villagers have joined the ranks of hemp paper craftsmen in the two villages. Xishan Township has also opened a “manual paper poverty alleviation training base”, asking local papermakers to share their experiences and conduct training from time to time. The industrial chain is also constantly expanding. Two villages have already appeared “professionals” who specialize in cutting branches and specializing in the acquisition of eucalyptus bark.

“With the help of the Internet, the ancient papermaking technique has revived.” Li Wenbo, the head of Xishan Township, said that this is “helping more in one fell swoop” to help rural revitalization. Not only do more young people return to work, but they also drive the villagers out of poverty and become rich. Let the ancient culture get a new heritage.
