Line types include straight lines, object frames, rectangles, and path lines.
Linear control is a problem we often encounter in layout production. Especially how to use the zoom function correctly, everyone must master.
The zoom function doesn't seem to be difficult, but in practice, if you don't pay attention to it, an error will occur. In use, we should pay attention to the following points:
1) Try to use the zoom tool in the InDesign tool bar
Most people like to zoom manually. In fact, this habit may not be very good, because it is difficult to accurately control the line type. So here we still recommend that you use the zoom tool as much as possible.
There are two types of zoom tool operations. Whether the object you are operating is a single line or a group of lines with other objects, you can operate as follows.
One is to select the zoom tool, click a reference point on the layout, and then move the mouse up, down, left, and right, and the line type (or other objects) will be vertically and horizontally zoomed. Or hold down the shift key to zoom in proportion.
The second method is to first select the line type that needs to be zoomed, double-click the zoom tool, and fill in the proportion that needs to be zoomed in the dialog box that appears.
The above methods are discussed in various tutorials, so I wo n’t go into details here.
The key point here is the control of the line width (that is, the thickness). We want to use the "zoom line style" option in the extended menu in the arrow on the right side of the line style toolbar.
The basic width of the line type must be determined first. Such as: 2 mm.
If you want the line width to remain unchanged during the linear scaling process, then do not click the "Zoom line type" option. Then zoom operation. In this way, no matter what scale you scale the line, the line width is still 2 mm.
If you want to zoom in and out, the width of the line will change accordingly. Then select the line type to be zoomed, and then select the "Zoom line type" option. Then zoom in again. For example, if the zoom is 200% of the original size, it is doubled.

pay attention! After zooming with "Zoom line type" selected, you will find that the line width on the screen has indeed changed. However, in the information in the line toolbar, the line width is still 2 mm, but the value in the zoom column is 200%. We will talk about it below.
2) Manual zoom
In special situations, many people will also use the manual zoom function. The manual operation method is as follows:
Select the line type or object that needs to be zoomed. Eight small hollow squares will appear around the object. You can use the solid arrow tool to hold any of the small squares according to the zooming needs, and do horizontal vertical or overall zooming.
If you want to scale proportionally, you can hold down the shift key and drag the objects in the small squares at the four corners.
However, if you want to control the width of the line type, there will be some problems. The problem is: When zooming manually, the "Zoom Line Style" option in the extended menu in the Line Style toolbar does not work. So, what if we need to change the line width (thickness)? There are two cases here:
When scaling a single line, the width of the line type cannot be controlled manually. No matter how you scale, the width of the line type will not change.
After grouping the line types containing other objects, if you want to change the width of the line type while zooming, you can control the line type width in a special way. This method is:
Hold down the Apple key (if you want to zoom horizontally and vertically, you must also press the shift key at the same time), then use the solid arrows to select the eight small hollow squares around the group of objects to zoom.

Information displayed in the toolbar after zooming in
After the operation is completed, we will see on the screen that the width of the line has changed according to your zoom ratio. However, the line information bar in the toolbar still shows the same situation after changing the line width using the zoom tool. That is, the line width display remains unchanged, and the zoom ratio changes.
3) Set the actual width of the line after scaling
As mentioned above, after scaling the line type width, the line type width display does not change, but the scaling ratio has changed. As in the example above, the line type width is still 2 mm, but the value in the scale column is 200 %. Then, the line width is not actually 2 mm, but: 2 mm X 200% = 4 mm.
What if we want to display the actual width directly, or if we want to change the width of the line now?
The first step: select the scaled line, or select the grouped object containing the line;
Step 2: Click the arrow on the right side of the line toolbar, and we will find that a command has been added to the menu bar that appears: "Restore zoom to 100%."
Step 3: Select the "Restore zoom to 100%" command.
The purpose of this step is to reset the zoomed ratio to zero. No matter what ratio you zoomed to, it is now treated as 100%.
At this time, when we look at the line toolbar again, we will see that the line width in the line toolbar is 4 mm, and the value in the zoom column is 100%.
This is the actual width of the scaled line type. Below, we can easily observe or change the actual width of this line in the line toolbar.
