When he was a child, he had painted cartoons of serial killings and murders of innocent people, pedophiles raping unicorns (and then unicorns raped and killed pedophiles and other unicorns)... There are network blackspots, saying that he is a potential serial killer, a child with a shadow of childhood, a sexually perverted man, or all of the above.

This buddy is Joan Cornellá.

The Man Behind the Gory Art

Man behind bloody art

Artparasites: I think that every piece of art contains the artist's autobiography, so understanding the artist's life is very important for the interpretation of the work. How does your work reflect your person?

Joan Cornellá: I have a certain degree of skepticism about the fact that my work reflects my people. At a certain moment, I can accept -- or partially accept -- I am a cynical, fanatical, the world's most savage person, an extremely docile person, a comfortable old car, a pacifist The fascist, a liar, my work reflects me and everything I have said.

Artparasites: Do you remember your first painting? How did you learn to paint?

Joan Cornellá: I don't even remember what I did yesterday. Of course I can't remember it, but I guess it must be very good. When I was a child, my grandfather taught me to paint. He is a good teacher and a very scary painter. He paints with a toothbrush on the wall of my house. He is a color blind.

Artparasites: Although your work is very rich in color, looks beautiful and very happy, but they are also very bloody and violent. It seems that you don't care much about things that are generally judged to be bad tastes, or that are considered morally corrupt. Do you have any taboos? What content do you ever touch?

Joan Cornellá: I am not very clear about where my boundaries are, but I am sure that I will never draw a squirrel to speak. I will never draw a person who is blaspheming, adultery or doing something to steal a chicken and a dog. I am a very straight person.

Artparasites: Your comics are very sexually suggestive, and in a very different way. You make jokes with some very controversial scenes, such as animal traitors, genital mutilation, and so on. Moreover, apart from the violent part, the characters you write are still full of sexual provocation for most of the time. But outside of your creation? What can ignite your "sex" interest? How is your sex life?

Joan Cornellá: My grandmother raped me with an umbrella when I was six years old. Since then I have been able to make love with girls who disguise themselves as umbrellas, but it is really difficult to find the perfect umbrella camouflage. I mean, good umbrellas are available, but it's hard to find. And, well, I also noticed that some people pretend to be umbrellas and want to come with me, but they are actually children, so I have to call the police. A lot of children want to commit adultery with a decent older adult, which must be stopped.

Artparasites: If you are not an artist, what would you be?

Joan Cornellá: A tramp.

Artparasites: I can imagine that you will get a lot of criticism for your work. What will offend you?

Joan Cornellá: Some of the information I received would offend me, like this: I love your nerve disease, WTF, LOL.

Artparasites: There are another amazing qualities in your characters. They all look happy and laugh, even when they face death. Do you believe that people can be happy when everything happens?

Joan Cornellá: The people in my advertisements that I watched on TV all the time are like this, laughing like flowers whenever something happens. My characters are the same as small robots. The kind of little robot you will see in TV commercials. You can see a lot of actors, politicians, celebrities, or other categories of people, all of these small robots that are twisted out of a pose and smiling. I think this smile is particularly humorous and ironic. They will be beaten and insulted, but they will never stop smiling.

Artparasites: If you can choose, how do you want to die?

Joan Cornellá: Death and love are very great themes. Eros and Tanatos. I don't know. I think everyone will consider the death, but I won't really want to talk about it. So, if you can present this particular topic in a funny, ridiculous way, it is more or less a catharsis. I want to die alone, no money, no friends, just like me today.
