To 8 children died, IKEA recalled 17.3 million chests of drawers

On November 21, 2017, after capturing the lives of eight young children, IKEA announced that it will recall the Malm series drawers and dressing tables from the North American market.

Experts remind that for the safety of children, furniture with dangerous dumping in the room should be fixed on the wall. For product recall notices, you should respond positively and not be lucky.

The Malm series is one of IKEA's best-selling products. But for the parents of young children, it is still a "dead drawer." In May 2017, Jozef Dudek, a 2-year-old boy from California, was overwhelmed by a Malm drawer.

The death of Jozef awakens the memory of death for the other three children--Curren Collas, a two-year-old child in Pennsylvania in February 2014; Camden Ellis, a 23-month-old in Washington, USA, in May 2014; February 2016, Minnesota's 22-month-old Theodore McGee was killed under the same brand of chest of drawers.

Theodore McGee was crushed to death by the collapse of the Malm drawers in his sleep. At that time, the mother put him in the room to sleep, check it every 20 minutes. The last time I went in, the tragedy occurred - the child was pressed under the six-drawer cabinet and there was no breathing.

According to the Washington Post, IKEA paid $50 million in damages to the three families, setting a new record for the amount of compensation in the history of furniture lawsuits.

Compensation cannot eliminate the grief of losing a child. Curren's mother once told the media that the compensation only shows that the lawsuit has come to an end, and his life is very different: "Even if I live to 100, my life will be divided into two parts: 'own son' and 'lost son'".

For the drawer category, the safety standards of the United States and Canada must be able to "freely stand" - that is, open the drawer, and when the drawer load reaches 50 pounds (about 45.36 kg), it can still "stand" without falling over.

The problem with the Malm drawer is that if the baby is not fixed to the wall, the young child may fall over when he opens the drawer or tries to climb, causing a tragedy.

To date, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 186 reports of accidents involving Malm drawers and dressing tables, and more than 90 children have been injured.

In fact, in July 2015, IKEA publicly warned about this risk and announced a make-up plan: a free shipping kit and reminded customers to fix the chest of drawers to the wall on the installation drawings. But the effect is slim. According to relevant statistics, as of May 2016, IKEA only sent 300,000 tool kits, which is far from the total recall of 29 million.

The parents of the children who died said that they did not notice the IKEA recall notice and did not receive a special notice. It is not until the tragedy occurs that the product has a safety hazard.

On November 22, 2017, the same brand, the same type of drawers and vanity cabinets that were recalled in the United States were still sold in IKEA stores and official websites in China.

A year ago, news from the other side of the ocean was sent back to China, triggering a strong butterfly effect. At first, IKEA insisted on not recalling the policy: “The drawers sold in China meet the Chinese mechanical standards for mechanical properties of furniture – the standard for cabinet stability.”

Subsequently, Xinhua News Agency issued a bombardment of IKEA "arrogance." Consumers' associations and quality inspection departments across the country have talked about the IKEA branch in the locality and demanded that there be no difference in recalling the problem products.

On July 12, 2016, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced that after the interview, IKEA submitted a recall plan to recall the series of drawers such as Malm, which were sold in the Chinese market from 1999 to 2016, involving 268 products. There are 1,660,845 in the mainland.

Entering the “Recall” on the official website of IKEA China, you can still search for the statement “Recalling a series of drawers such as Malm.” The IKEA chest of drawers is safe when you use the anti-tip connection in the product to secure the product to the wall according to the installation instructions. However, the IKEA China website does not use the scroll bar to remind the product like the IKEA US website. The recall statement still requires consumers to raise their own safety awareness and take the initiative to apply for recall or reinforcement.

The reporter called IKEA China and received feedback that the above recall statement is not limited, and domestic consumers can apply for free reinforcement or full refund.

IKEA and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission have suggested that for the safety of children, furniture with dangerous dumping in the room should be fixed to the wall. In addition, the notice of product recall should be positively responded and cannot be lucky. (Source: Today's explosion)
