Royal British Forces Training Manual (Chapter 4)

The third week of selection is to speed up the construction, usually called "test week." In fact, there is not much difference between this part of the process and the previous one. It is still the endurance training based on the positioning of orientation in the mountains of Wales. However, its actual strength is the largest among any elite elite on the ground. In addition, this is completely isolated - you have to decide on your own, either to succeed or to fail. Breconbricks Mountain is a truly lonely place. At this stage, trainees may begin to feel discouraged and lost. Their minds began to remorse and began to hear such voices "continue, give up." When recruits arrive at each gathering place, the drill sergeant will say something like this in a compassionate, reasonable tone: "Come on, guys, you have done your utmost to get on the truck. Come here today, we Will pull you back, eat hot food, take a shower.” If recruits seem to think of these things, he will be sent back to the original unit. To maintain the same belief from beginning to end, anyone who doubts his original intention, he certainly will not become a good special commander.

The duration of the endurance training of the test week is more than 20 kilometers.

And there are many scary steep slopes. These routes were selected because of the extremely horrible steep slopes, which are difficult to walk on and at the same time require the soldiers to demonstrate their ability to identify and locate at night. The average weight of the rucksack is 23 kg at this time, but in some exercises it will reach 32 kg. In addition to such a large backpack, you must also carry bullet bags, rifles, water bottles, and an ammunition box full of stones or concrete weighing about 10 kilograms. In short, the total weight you will carry on this day may weigh 41 kg.

Of all the routes chosen, the most important thing is to "learn" or "endurance march." As a special airline regiment soldier said: "Endurance - this is a horror-like walk." His description is correct. During the endurance march, the total weight of the kit was 36 kilograms, the route length was 64 kilometers, and the time to complete the journey was 20 hours. And on the previous day an exhausting march had been completed and there was no sleep at all at night, and you had to set off at midnight, regardless of the weather in front of you in the Welsh mountains. If your motivation and determination are not 100% as you set off, your chances of passing this level are almost negligible.

"Endurance" is the final stage of selection. Passing through all of the hardest hurdles in this test—for example, not missing any set of venues within the allotted time—at the same time, although you haven't been in a special airline, at least you've already continued additional training. Although the road is far from over, all those who pass the selection will tell you that this process gives you a sense of accomplishment and relief. From this time onwards, you will begin to learn the real skills of the special Air Corps soldier.

How to go through the selection

We have detailed an overview of the nature and content of the selection. Now it's time to look back and see what makes some people out of the game, while others can pass, and what you do to have the greatest chance of passing.

The first thing to say right away is that there are no shortcuts and tips for the selection. Over the years, the drills of the special air force regiments have seen all attempts to use the scams and have learned all the shortcuts that have been tried-all means for the companions to carry you or to bury the unused instruments in a certain position. Remember: You will be caught and returned to the original unit. Then also emphasize that if you are a class of people who intend to cheat, even if you successfully pass the selection process, the taint of your character will eventually appear on other occasions. It is best to rely entirely on your own ability to pass.

In the second chapter, we introduced the orientation and orientation techniques you need to use in your selection. Routes through Wales make these techniques useful, but to maintain a good speed between the two rendezvous points, you need more than just compass map techniques. First of all, when you have a coordinate position, you must carefully choose your route to get there, instead of relying on poor judgment like "Crow". Sometimes the fastest route is not a straight line distance. The slope indicated by the contours and any information on the nature of the slopes should be taken into account.

Loss can be the main reason for lost time—second only to physical failure. Reading maps and compasses must be quick and accurate. Regular inspection of routes is the best way to avoid unnecessary deviations. In bad weather with very low visibility, the more cautious you are, the more likely you will be able to find the right direction, although you should have enough confidence to read the map and then have enough confidence to move at full speed.

To maintain a high level of physical strength, and not to waste any time during the selection process, even if you drink water to keep moving. (You can connect the straw to the cup attached to the belt. This is the best way.) Also, be careful not to eat too much or you will feel sick in action. You only need to eat a little ration each time, and the frequency is higher, so as to ensure that you always have the required energy supply.

Resting for a while is one of the best ways to restore strength and boost morale. Be smart to schedule time - eat meals, dry all wet clothes, repair any damaged equipment, check the map to determine the direction of the next phase, and treat all the damaged places.

However, perhaps the most serious problems you will encounter during the selection process are psychological and health problems. We first talk about psychological issues: feelings of failure, depression and loss of confidence are the main reasons for failure. Understandably, why the selection will lead to such a dark mood, so that recruits give up even when their performance fully meets the requirements. Special air crew training has always been very demanding, coupled with bad weather, lack of comfort, physical pain, a discerning drill sergeant, horrible elimination rate, etc. These factors interweave even the strongest souls. Pressing.

As mentioned earlier in reference to a special airline regimental soldier, many people who participated in the selections participated because of wrong reasons, so even before they started, they had been doomed to their failure. To regard the special airline regiment as a profession, to maintain a passion for training at all times, this will be one of the greatest advantages you have in your efforts to pass the selection. All those who participate in the selection will achieve extreme fatigue, but only those who have perseverance and determination can overcome the pain of fatigue and even overcome the pain.

The question of motivating yourself throughout the darkness is that you should constantly ask yourself what you are asking to pass through this process (assuming you know the answer to this question). Fatigue may make the whole world seem unrealistic, so firmly tell yourself - shouting out may be the best way, because your own voice can pull you out of this introspection - successful completion of the selection is You must do the most elite troops in the world. Use the brain to imagine that you can put yourself into action. Imagine if you were regretted and lost face when you were returned to the original unit. Some soldiers of the special airline regiment said that in the selection process, when the time is very difficult, they will think about the faces of their children and they are filled with the desire to be proud of their father. Whatever the circumstances, it is best to make up your mind and think about what will most effectively encourage you to pass the selection. From time to time, throughout the training process, you will think back to the scene that promotes you to forge ahead.

For many people, the hardest part to deal with is injury. Some injuries, like blisters and swollen feet, are most common to every soldier who passes the selection. Unless the blisters are infected and there is a real risk of blood poisoning, then such injuries will be dealt with simply by a doctor under the order - but no matter how much pain, you should continue to move forward. The best way to deal with sustained pain is to either ignore it or despise it. Ignoring pain is not an easy task. It is irrelevant for you to try to pretend that these pains are not psychological, and to use it to describe it in a way to lighten it. Do not think "this is a great pain", but to think "My body can cope with this, no problem." You will find that contempt of pain is the best way. To make you more aggressive, to make yourself stronger and to maximize your contempt for pain. The challenge of inspiring yourself will help here. When a special Air Corps soldier described the bones he was exhausted as he had participated in the selection process, he encouraged this by inspiring such a strong sense of competition:

"...if I see the rucksack in front of me, I will try to catch him, and if I think someone is trying to catch up with me, I will keep myself from catching up with others. When the fog falls, I have no problem, because I can't see my opponent. I just scratched my bones so I continue to move on. Then, when the fog disappears, I will see something People, then thought, 'OK, let's go, catch up with that bastard,' and then I set off.'

Although in the selection process, depression and despair are common to many people, the methods for solving problems vary from person to person. However, you must ensure that there is a reason to stand firm in the first place. When any falls behind, think back to this reason in his head. Remember the wisdom of Confucius - unhappiness is due to the contradiction between what you want and the actual situation. Accept the way of reality whole-heartedly, don't expect anything else, so you can regain strength. In the context of a special air force mission, this means that if you want to be the best, then the cruelty of accepting selection is the right way.
