Chapter 1 Willingness to Live

Many survival cases show that a firm, strong will can overcome many difficulties. There is a case in which a man was trapped in the desert for eight days. He had no food, no water, and he did not receive any training in survival skills. So he did not do one thing, but he wanted to live. It was with this firm will and faith that he survived.

With training, equipment, and the will to live, you will be able to conquer all obstacles encountered and you will be able to survive.

Prepare for survival

You can now do two things to help yourself prepare for: (1) survival training in different environments; (2) understanding where you are going.

You need to learn how to find water and food, how to use natural terrain to hide, how to build a shelter, how to identify directions, how to navigate through different terrains, when to do so, and so on.

You also need to learn how to keep your health, how to avoid the dangers in the environment, and how to heal yourself.

Most importantly, you need to know that taking a break is far more useful than speed. Whether you are struggling to advance in the jungle, face the lack of water in the desert, or travel through the Arctic ice, you must plan carefully and be careful not to blindly advance.

You want to know the residents of the area you are going to. This knowledge and common sense will help you deal with local people. If the residents you want to reach the area are not allied with the enemy, you have nothing to worry about. You can benefit from the close contact with them. Knowing their customs and habits in advance and expressing your humility and courtesy with local customs, you may be able to get their help.

However, just knowing the environment, knowing how to get water and food, and how to take care of yourself is not enough. You must also have the right attitude. In other words, you must accept a reality: as a soldier, this kind of survival situation is likely to last for a long time, and is likely to be alone, and may have only a small amount of equipment. You must realize that this condition may suddenly come without warning, and you must be ready at all times.

If you have the opportunity, you can go to a survival school, receive training in various survival skills, and practice before those skills really work. Training will increase your confidence. Knowing these issues - that is, knowing yourself - is very important for survival, and it is directly related to how you will overcome those stressful pressures: fear, anxiety, pain; injury, illness, cold, heat, thirst, hunger , fatigue, insomnia, boredom, loneliness, loneliness.

The body's reaction mechanism usually helps you adapt to stress. For example, when you are scared or angry, the physiological mechanism will cause changes in your body, make you alert and give you more energy. But these physiological mechanisms may also betray you in survival situations. For example, your "normal" reaction to hunger (a type of stress) may prompt you to leave your head unconscious, grab the food in the enemy's camp, and finally reveal yourself and be captured.

The two biggest dangers in the survival process are the desire for comfort and the negative attitude. You must realize that both of these dangers embody an attitude that hopes for less resistance, negates your efforts and desire to overcome stress, and makes you focus only on the immediate interests and ignore the overall plan for survival. .

To overcome the first danger - the desire for comfort - you need to change your perception of comfort. The secret of change lies in the following reasoning: To compare your current discomfort with the discomfort you would face if caught, the current discomfort is only temporary, and as a prisoner, your discomfort may continue indefinitely. And even more so. Knowing your tolerance for discomfort and your need for comfort will help you move on. Comfort is not indispensable to life!

To avoid the second danger - negative attitudes - you need to know what negative attitudes will bring about.

Some physiological conditions can lead to negative emotions such as exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to cold weather, excessive loss of body fluids (dehydration), extreme fatigue, weakness, and illness, which can make you negative Emotions. You can avoid these situations through proper planning and reasonable decisions.

Weak willpower can also lead to negative emotions. Frustrated, numb, cold and slowly climbed into my heart, and then suddenly shot you down, making you helpless.

It is very important to discover the signs of negative emotions in peers in a timely manner. The first signs of negative emotions are obedience, quietness, little communication with people, lack of appetite, and failure to place orders. The best way to deal with this kind of emotion is to eliminate or directly face the physical and psychological pressure that caused this emotion.

Here are the enemies you survived. They are very common physiological and psychological pressures that will affect your ability to deal with various living conditions.

pain. Pain is your body language and it tells you that you are hurt. Pain itself is harmless, but it does make you feel uncomfortable. If your thoughts are focused on other things, you may not be aware of the pain, but once you are stunned by the feeling of pain, it is likely to completely knock you down, weakening your will to survive. But if you can do the following things, you can endure pain -

● Understand its origin and nature.

● Think of it as something tolerable.

● Focus on what you need to do (think, plan, keep yourself busy).

● Take pride in your ability to endure pain.

cold. The cold will reduce your work efficiency, make your mind slower, do not want to do anything else, just want to keep warm. It lowers the speed of your blood flow and makes you sleepy. These consequences of cold are dangerous. Before the cold weakens your will to live, you must immediately seek shelter and fire and heat.

Hot. The typical symptom of being unaccustomed to heat is weakness. However, you can gradually become accustomed to high temperatures, and your blood circulation, breathing rhythm, heart rhythm, and secretion of sweat glands can be adjusted to a state suitable for a hot climate in 2 to 6 days. When you are in direct sunlight in hot weather, be sure to cover your head. Do not act at the highest temperature in the day if conditions permit.

Thirsty. The two most serious problems in survival are thirst and dehydration. Thirst, if not very serious, can make you unresponsive. Drink plenty of water when there is sufficient supply, especially when eating. If the water supply is insufficient, it is necessary to reduce the intake of food, because the body needs extra water to deal with the useless ingredients in the food, which will accelerate the occurrence of dehydration. As long as enough water is supplied, it can be recovered from the dehydrated state at any time.

hunger. Prolonged hunger can affect attitudes, morale and the will to live. If the situation does not improve, malnutrition and hunger can lead to the following symptoms: weight loss, weakness, dizziness, shock, slow heartbeat, coldness and thirst. In many areas you can find a large number of edible items that you thought were not edible (see Chapter 6 for details). In order to survive, you must abandon the problem of picky eaters and partial eclipses. If you can eat something, you must eat it.

fatigue. Fatigue will weaken your mental capacity and make you indifferent to everything and produce a feeling of “I don’t care”. Excessive exertion or overwork will lead to fatigue, and some psychological factors will also lead to fatigue, such as hopelessness, lack of goals, dissatisfaction, frustration, boredom and other psychological. At this time, the preferred method of curing fatigue is of course rest. When fatigue has affected your mental and physical abilities, you can feel it yourself. If you realize that the situation is critical, you will most likely be refreshed and move on. Mentally induced fatigue can sometimes be overcome by changes in behavior, or it can be a little less vigorous exercise, or talk and communicate with others.

Tired. Repetition and monotony are the two major causes of boredom, followed by loss of interest, feelings of tension, anxiety, and frustration. This time is particularly frustrating and hopeless. To overcome boredom, you must always remember your goals—survival—and remember that the tasks you perform are consistent with your overall survival plan.

lonely. Being alone in a difficult, dangerous situation often causes another stress - loneliness. Loneliness can make you feel helpless and desperate. To overcome these emotions, self-sufficiency is very important.

You have been developing your self-sufficiency in your life. You learned how to make things yourself, how to make yourself comfortable when you are alone, how to accept a new environment, how to deal with new issues, and so on. In addition, your military training provides you with a lot of supplementary knowledge and teaches you how to deal with the problems and circumstances that you may encounter. You are ready for participation, planning, and thinking for a well-thought-out goal. These are the countermeasures to deal with loneliness.

You can practice to enhance your self-sufficiency - completely rely on your own ability. Every day, you have the opportunity to practice: make your own decisions, and rely on yourself; experience new situations and solve emerging problems. You must learn to accept the reality of new situations or emergencies and then take appropriate actions. This is the most important psychological quality that survival must possess. Don't sit still and move!

attitude

Regardless of what happens, having a "survival attitude" is extremely important. For emergency drills, whether mentally or physically, you can prepare for your later habitual actions. Knowledge about survival and exercises will give you confidence - the attitude of survival will allow you to be prepared for any unexpected events, although you may not be fully aware at the time. If a person does not have a positive attitude, he is easily distracted when he is in a terrible environment.
