The article shows that by increasing the concentration of serotonin in male mice lacking serotonin, it is possible to reverse the preference of male rats and regain female preference within tens of minutes.
The study found that serotonin molecules in the brain and neurons expressing serotonin are essential for male courtship, thus revealing the molecular and cellular principles of mammalian courtship regulation. In general, when male rats face other female rats and male rats, they mostly pursue female rats. Rao Yi's laboratory uses genetics, molecular biology, and pharmacology methods to change the genes so that serotonin in the brain cannot be synthesized, or cells containing serotonin cells cannot survive. Equal pursuit. Originally, male rats only sent ultrasonic waves similar to love songs to females, and mutant males also sang to males. In adult rats, they can increase the serotonin concentration in male mice lacking serotonin by adding drugs, which can reverse the preference of male rats and re-prefer females within tens of minutes.
These results indicate that serotonin, a molecule (neurotransmitter) that transmits information between nerve cells and neurons containing serotonin (“serotoninergic neuronsâ€) play an important role in regulating courtship selection in the brain.
