Let furniture be the "slave" of the body

In the words of an ergonomic furniture designer: "It is time to redefine the way we sit and other ways of doing things. What the human body needs, desires explain everything, this is how we design."

Cao Junjie

How should we sit? What kind of posture should I sleep or work? If you want to redefine it, then from the "mechanical design" to the "life design" new wave, the design closely related to ergonomic research and technology will be the new direction in our living environment in the future.

As the only contracted furniture manufacturer in ID magazine's “Top Ten Design-Promoting Companies”, Humanscale has 15 to 20 similar Diffrient Worlds each year, consisting of 25 designers including Divriente. Ergonomic products such as work chairs. Its Diffrient World work chair won the Red Dot Award "The Best of Choice" this year. Recently, Humanscale private air purifiers and Horizon LED work lights were respectively awarded the 2011 Green Energy Excellence Design Award.

In a sense, ergonomic furniture is a purely TED-style revolution. TED refers to the acronym for Technology Entertainment Design in English, namely technology, entertainment, and design.

Temptation of the chair

Let me talk about the chair first. Modernist architect Mies van der Rohe once said: "The chair is a very difficult design product, and a skyscraper may be easier." Of course, to some extent this can be used as a famous architect. .

But who can reject this temptation: When a person sits in a chair, it automatically balances your weight against the forces that cause tilting. Regardless of your height geometry, it automatically measures the force required to tilt based on your weight so you don't have to find something to adjust.

The Diffrient World work chair, designed by the legendary 83-year-old Niels Diffrient, is almost entirely based on the human body's desires. According to Red Dot Awards judge Gordon Bruce: "This is the most intuitive, comfortable, easy to adjust and smartest chair ever made."

It's simple, with only eight main components and weighs only 11.3 kg. It seems that it is not much different from an ordinary office chair, but it has been designed by Divriente for nine years. Previously, he designed chairs for tractors, cars, and submarines.

The most important thing about Diffrient World is the implementation of the weight-sensitive reclining function, which is not achieved by mechanical means. This mechanically inclined device uses only two frame structures, using the user. The body weight and physical laws can be adjusted to the optimal state for each user, without the need for locks, dialing positions or manual controls.

Another core technology is Form-Sensing, which, unlike the cumbersome and uncomfortable extra lumbar support of other stamped seats, offers the best lumbar support for every user. In addition, the front end of the stamped seat bottom plate has a frameless structure.

It is worth mentioning that the Diffrient World work chair uses 80 parts, which is less than 1/3 of the traditional work chair, but provides a very high level of performance and functionality. The use of very few parts, controls and mechanisms means that Diffrient World work chairs will have fewer parts damaged over time. If the work chair eventually needs to be replaced, it is designed to be easily disassembled into units and up to 97% of the contents are recycled.

Redefining behavior

The Green Energy Excellence Design Award was presented by Athenaeum, Chicago: the Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architectural Art Design and Urban Studies. Two award-winning products, Humanscale recently brought it to Shanghai.

Based on the Swedish inventor Andrzej Loreth's private purifier ZON, which was invented by air purification technology, it is called another revolutionary product in the field of ergonomics. It looks like a portable fan that doesn't turn the page. Convenient, lightweight, and even unremarkable.

However, this purifier with positive and negative electric adsorption principle may be the leader in the future indoor environment optimization. As a personal office environment or furniture environment, no such similar furniture has ever been produced. Different from the traditional air filter and negative ion air purifier, ZON has almost no noise after starting, and can effectively filter more than 99% of different pollutants in the air. For example: dust, smoke, bacteria, allergens, smoke, viruses, and even volatile organic compounds (VOCs), in short, it cleans the air as much as possible.

ZON is made from 80% recycled materials. Conventional air filters have a lot of noise and produce ozone, while negative ion air purifiers do not concentrate the germs in more cases, but instead cause them to fall into the ground. ZON is also the only air purifier that offers a recyclable filter.

What happens in the field of ergonomics tells us that in the future, designers are trying to make artifacts a "slave" of the body, rather than enslaving the body. Think about the mechanical age, and now there are people like the champions like Gary Grant in the 1930s, wearing high boots and breeches, an old leather jacket, an amazing helmet, extraordinary goggles, and There is an indispensable white scarf floating in the air. He always takes a leisurely step toward his plane, throws the cigarette to one side, grabs the girl waiting for one side, and gives her a deep kiss, mechanically. Fully controllable, making every flight the last time in life.

As Divriente said: "It's time to redefine the way we sit and other ways of doing things. What the human body needs, desires explain everything, and that's how we design."
