The Schmidt-type near-Earth object telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences passed the acceptance assessment of the expert group organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on December 26. This marks that China's first near-Earth object detection telescope has its own "identity card" and entered the official operation stage.
It is understood that the only near-Earth object telescope in China currently has the characteristics of large caliber, large field of view, and strong detection capabilities. Its observation level is among the highest in the world.
In order to search for near-Earth objects with potential threats to the earth in time, with the strong support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the Purple Mountain Observatory and Nanjing Astronomical Instrument Development Center jointly developed this 1-meter near-Earth object detection telescope.
Yang Jiexing, a researcher at the Purple Mountain Observatory in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that the telescope installed at the Xuyi Observatory in Zijin Mountain uses a Schmitt-type optical system with a corrected mirror aperture of 1.04 meters and a spherical reflection main mirror of 1.2 meters. It has the characteristics of a large field of view and strong light power. . The telescope is also equipped with a new generation of CCD (Electronic Coupling Device) detector, which is also the highest sensitivity CCD detector independently developed by Zijinshan Observatory, with drift scanning function. With its help, the telescope can shoot very dark stars.
In October 2006, the telescope was successfully connected with the CCD detection system, and then it was put into trial observation. Zhao Haibin, a researcher at the Purple Mountain Observatory, introduced at the project acceptance meeting on the 26th that during the trial operation for more than three years, this telescope has achieved a series of observations and has been highly praised by experts at home and abroad.
The search and risk assessment of asteroids and near-Earth objects are the main observation targets of this telescope. According to Zhao Haibin, as of now, they have reported nearly 300,000 observations of more than 70,000 asteroids to the International Asteroid Center; discovered 721 new asteroids with temporary numbers; discovered and named a new comet. " P / 2007S1 (ZHAO).
In addition to searching for asteroids, the telescope has also participated in a number of domestic and foreign observation projects, including the International Joint Measurement of Space Debris in Synchronous Orbit, International Comet Measurement, Initial Analysis of Astrometric Performance, and Obscuration of Dead Comet Candidates.
According to reports, after entering official operation, the Purple Mountain Observatory will make full use of the telescope's advantages in field of view and accuracy to carry out various astronomical observation research, including near-Earth object collision warning, asteroid and comet deep space detection pre-study ; High-orbit space debris and target observation; exoplanet system search and other cutting-edge scientific research.
