A research report recently released by the Pasteur Institute in France shows that some viruses can “clump together†to form complex structures similar to bacterial biofilms. This structure can greatly improve the efficiency of virus transmission in the body.
Experts from the Pasteur Institute found that after the type I T-lymphocytic leukemia virus invaded the cell, part of the virus left on the cell surface would combine with similar viruses to form a biofilm-like structure. This is a viral polymer rich in sugar, the synthesis of which is controlled by viral genes and is achieved using special substances secreted by the cells.
Type I T-lymphocytic leukemia virus is the first human retrovirus isolated by researchers. It was discovered in 1980 and is the culprit of many diseases. Experts now know that this virus can only be spread through cell-to-cell contact in the host.
The researchers said that there is a substance similar to a protective coating on the virus biofilm that has been found. Because of this protective substance, it is in a "huddle" state. Type I T lymphocyte leukemia virus is in the cell. The spread efficiency between them is much higher than that of a single virus in a free state. The researchers found that after eliminating the viral biofilm on the surface of the infected cells, the ability of this virus to spread in the muscles was reduced by 80%, which shows that the form of biofilm has an important role in the spread of this virus.
Researchers are now trying to determine whether other viruses can also be combined into a "huddle" structure. If it is found that this "group" structure is generally conducive to virus transmission, then eliminating such structures may become an important medical research and treatment direction in the future.
